Bernard Cecil Gotch was born in Chilcombe near Winchester and was both a student and teacher at Winchester School of Art. During his time in Winchester, prior to his move to London following the First World War, he painted numerous watercolours in and around Winchester. Whilst in London he had solo exhibitions at Lincolns Inn and the Fine Art Society and was eventually approached to illustrate a book on the Public Schools of England which was subsequently abandoned. Some of the works he completed for this project were exhibited at the Fine Art Society in 1927.
